This course has an amazing, detailed reading list for science fiction. Most of it I, the parent, have never read, but always wanted to. My 14-yr-old son was so excited. He has started the reading list and looks forward to each new book he encounters! I love presenting this as worthy reading, along with literary classics! C.A., Homeschool Parent
_____
For students (ages 9-adult) who read well and who enjoy reading, and who really want to read and know more about sci-fi!
What is Science Fiction? Who were its greatest writers? What are the greatest works in this, the most popular literary genre of our time? Start your student’s adventure through the world of tomorrow, today! This course was created by a teacher who taught Science Fiction as Literature on the High School level, and who has spent decades reading and even writing sci-fi. It is a labor of love.
If you read very well and you're interested in Science Fiction, this course is for you! An elective addition to our Step 3-4 Reading Program, this course takes the student through the history of Science Fiction, as the student is introduced to the Masters, and reads some forty of the greatest works in the genre.
Here awaits the fathers of sci-fi, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Golden Age works are introduced, by such grand masters as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, and Robert Heinlein. More recent voices, powerful and influential writers who are expanding the envelope of sci-fi are examined as well, such as Orson Scott Card, Dan Simmons and Neil Gaimon.
A world of modern imagination is unveiled through a carefully crafted reading list and exercises. Some of the books on the list can be downloaded off the internet, and links are provided to those. This course represents perhaps a full year or more of elective reading for the student! A rich and thorough introduction to science fiction.
