It's really amazing to teach this curriculum to students and watch them go from sheer boredom with the whole idea of school, to a very strong interest in learning in a short period of time. I've also seen new students become much more outgoing from having both a safe environment to learn in and subjects that are not only very interesting, but easily learned and applied." M.H., first teacher in a model Steps school
_____
How did the universe, the planet, and life get here? This course covers scientific, philosophical and religious ideas of creation, and for the pre-civilized development of mankind. Without bias, the course delivers to the student in a thorough and easily understood manner, conflicting (or seemingly conflicting) concepts about the world he lives in, and then allows the student himself to determine what he wishes to accept or reject.
The course makes use of various books and films. FILMS NEEDED TO DO THE COURSE ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE MATERIALS SOLD, AND MAY NEED TO BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY. (Most are available for free viewing on the Internet.) This course uses no text book, and can be started immediately.
Included are five tests, and answer guides. Also included is a vast Teacher's Guide, which contains materials that can help the instructor get a student through difficulties they may encounter.
This course is the shortest of the Step 4 (ages 11-adult) courses for history. The teen-aged students who first did this course almost always scored at 95% or better on their tests, on subject matter which many adults would unquestionably flounder. A great start to a profound study of history.
Subjects covered in this course include:
- Both scientific and religious concepts of how the universe, the world and life were created
- Basic ideas of science
- Evolution
- Artificial and Natural Selection
- Darwin
- The concept of God
- Genesis and its telling of Creation
- Hinduism and its concept of Creation from the Rig Veda
- The Mayas and their concept of Creation from the Popul Vuh
- The Vikings and their Creation myth
- The Big Bang
- Oscillating Universe Theory
- What a biosphere is
- Planet Earth
- Basic ideas of geology
- The dinosaurs (a lengthy section)
- Early types of man and their lives
_____
I never thought History was fun or easy. This course takes it apart, piece by piece in a way that the student can then put it all together in his or her mind to get the big picture. I'm studying (and learning) History right along with my kids now! It's fun! M.T., parent, educator
_____
This was a terrific course, giving the student a sense of the immense amount of "history" before the dawn of man. This course should be done along with the Step 4 science basics course. The lessons and exercises reinforce each other and prepare the student for more in-depth study. I like the author's approach to presenting history, in order, and love the exercises and supplemental materials. Recommended! K.B., Homeschool Mom
_____
This course is by far the BEST course I have ever done. It's so amazing how much you learn on this course, and everything you learn is so interesting and awesome, you really want to learn it. I'm really moving quickly on this, and loving it! D.C., age 14
_______
I have been doing the Steps curriculum and it's the best curriculum I've ever done. I'm actually learning things and having fun, too. Instead of just memorizing, doing the test, then forgetting and moving on, I really learn and remember the information. Also, I enjoy the way that the courses are written. I like how words are defined, use what you just learned (or are about to learn more about) in exercises, then watching documentaries, or doing other exercises having to do with the subject. Overall, I can safely say this is awesome stuff! W.H., age 12
